14/11/2024 EXTC Review by Kev White

New Wave/Art Rock/Post Punk EXTC are carrying on the legacy of legendary band XTC with the approval of original front man Andy Partridge. The band is original XTC member Terry Chambers (drums), Steve Hampton (lead guitar/vocals) and Terry Lines (bass/vocals).

Tonight was EXTC's debut gig at The Flowerpot and the turn-out was near capacity which was great to see. The performance was also the band's first show together after having a break from gigging earlier this year. The group were clearly having a great time onstage and really engaged with the crowd, the between song banter was often very witty.

This writer was not overly familiar with the body of work from XTC, bar the best known songs and as it turns out knew a lot more of their songs which was a pleasant surprise.

Opening with 'This Is Pop', the set spanned the career of XTC, gig highlights included 'Reel By Reel', 'Towers Of London', 'Senses Working Overtime', 'Jason and The Argonauts', 'The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead', 'Sgt Rock (Is Going To Help Me'), 'Rocket From A Bottle' and Making Plans For Nigel which brought the main set to a close. The crowd clapped and cheered for more, the band obliged and played an encore with 'Stupidly Happy' before wending with 'Life Begins On The Hop'.

The gig was really good and no doubt, was a trip down memory lane for many of those present. As a live band EXTC are highly recommended and will hopefully return to this fine venue.
