That, self-billed, "little ol' band from Essex" rolled up to The Flowerpot tonight for their debut show at the venue, but sadly there was no 1933 Ford Coupe in sight!
Blues/ Rock band ZZ Top's career spans over 50 years and have been called the American Status Quo due to their no nonsense boogie and refusal to break away from a winning formula. Lead guitarist/vocalist the Reverend Billy F Gibbons is highly respected guitarist who was even singled out for praise by Jimi Hendrix himself.
The show tonight had everything from the famous long beards and shades through to the furry spinning guitars and humour. The only thing missing, fortunately, was the wild animals like when ZZ Top toured with a travelling zoo on the legendary 'The Worldwide Texas Tour' 76-77. ZZ Toppd certainly looked and sounded the part!
From the moment the Tres Hombres came on stage opening with 'Got Me Under Pressure' ZZ Toppd took the audience on a full throttled journey ripping through the career of ZZ Top with such gems as 'I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide', 'Pearl Necklace', 'Rough Boy', 'Doubleback' from the film Back To The Future Part 3, 'TV Dinners', 'I Gotsta Get Paid', 'Burger Man', 'Planet Of Women', 'My Head's In Mississippi', 'Gimme All Your Lovin'. 'Legs' complete with the aforementioned furry spinning guitars ended the set. The band dutifully returned to the stage for an encore comprising 'Sharp Dressed Man', 'La Grange' and ended with the mighty 'Tush'.
With ZZ Toppd the stage set was very much no frills, what you see is what you get, but that just adds to the charm and raw energy of the gig. The attention to detail was faultless and the group delivered a seamless set which went down an absolute treat tonight!
