31/5/2024 | Endorphinmachine Prince Tribute | Review by Kev White |
There are a few bands who are so out there and yet so brilliant such as Kate Bush, The Grateful Dead, Florence and The Machine, Frank Zappa and the Mothers Of Invention that anyone who wants to replicate there sound and form a tribute band has to be brave and so sure of their ability. If they put a foot wrong, they would be found out. In some of these cases, this has been achieved.
Then there is Prince! Since the Funk/Rock prolific and controversial icon Prince died in 2016 there has been a huge void in the music industry that has yet to be filled. Prince was way ahead of his time, his legacy lives on, he deserves to be celebrated.
Enter Endorphinemachine, a nine piece band who celebrate the music of this legendary artist. To say that these guys have got guts, is an understatement. They have pretty much got an impossible task on their hands.
Curiosity got the better of this writer who went along to the gig tonight. Were they going to pull this off?
The two hour show was a celebration of all things Prince with a set list spanning his career. The question was more how much can be packed in to the set, the answer lay in some well executed medleys to cram in as many hits as possible, a feat which veteran Rockers, Status Quo have down to a fine art!
A case in point being opening shots 'Cream'/'U Got The Look'/'Thieves In The Temple'/'Take Me With You', this set the bar high and set the tone for the rest of the night. Later in the evening 'Let's Go Crazy'/'Raspberry Beret' really hit the spot.
However, this writer prefers hearing songs played in full. Of these, the stand out tracks were 'Sexy M*****F*****', 'Little Red Corvette', 'Get Off', A note perfect 'Purple Rain', the guitarist absolutely nailed that solo, brought the main set to a close. The audience yelled for more. The band returned for an encore of 'Kiss', notably covered by Tom Jones and The Art Of Noise in the 80s and, well, what else, but '1999'.
A triumphant gig indeed, Endorphinemachine were outstanding. Respect!
