29/3/2024 Miles Hunt Review by Kev White

Miles Hunt from Alt/Rock band The Wonder Stuff made a welcome return to The Flowerpot, his first gig at this venue for a few years and he has been much missed. Hunt is the front person, chief songwriter and rhythm guitarist in The Wonder Stuff, as group they have a great reputation both in the studio and as a live band. Hunt has also released some superb solo albums over the years.

The solo acoustic tours of intimate venues that have been undertaken by various musicians over the years are a great way for artist and fans to get up close and personal. These shows are a great opportunity to hear some well-known and deeper cuts not normally played live, stripped right back. The musician has nowhere to hide and these gigs showcase not only a performer's ability as a musician and but also just how good these songs are in the raw.

Tonight was no exception. Miles Hunt really has taken to the solo acoustic/story telling shows and is a true Master of this format. The anecdotes about Hunt as a solo artist and Wonder Stuff were often witty. The stories behind some of the songs were at times amusing, thought-provoking and poignant, a case in point being the powerful 'And She Gives (For Laney)'.

The gig room was set up as partially seated with some folks standing at the back, giving the feel of being sat round in someone's living room with a select group of people which really added to the intimacy. Just being in attendance felt like a privilege.

Set highlights were 'Manna From Heaven', 'Immortalising Chase', 'Things Can Change', 'Sing The Absurd', 'Can't Shape Up', 'Circlesquare' and set closer 'Give, Give, Give Me, More, More More'.

A couple of the biggest and best-known The Wonder Stuff were notable in their absence, that said, with the songs selected for this set, it won't have felt right had they been included.

Miles Hunt is a truly enigmatic and engaging performer who delivered a faultless and stunning show.
