This writer saw Pink Floyd live at Earl's Court Arena, London, in 1994, the venue has long since disappeared and subsequently Roger Waters solo and David Gilmour separately live. This writer has also attended shows by various Pink Floyd tribute bands over the years and has walked away from them feeling very disappointed to some who were actually ok.
Dark Side Of The Wall are a Pink Floyd tribute band from Coventry, thankfully proved to be a pleasant surprise, a breath of fresh air unusually they have lead vocalist who does not play an instrument but did a great job fronting the band and did not detract from the, at times, lengthy, instrumental sections, who stood back and let the music do the talking.
The show was split into two. The first set saw just five songs played, but they were long tracks, opening with the sublime 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts 1 – 5)', 'Sorrow' and 'Keep Talking' were particularly good. The musicianship was superb right across the board. After a 15 minute break DSOTW returned to the stage and treated the crowd to the classic album 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' in full. A brave move but treated with the utmost respect. Stand out tracks were 'Time', 'Money', 'Us and Them' and the ever spine chilling 'The Great Gig In The Sky'. Other highlights included 'Young Lust', a particularly moving version of 'Wish You Were Here' and 'Comfortably Numb' which was spot on.
The band did bring some additional lighting to the venue which added to the overall experience. DSOFTW faithfully replicate the sound and ambience of a Pink Floyd. As Floyd will never play live again, DSOTW, really are the next best thing and are well worth witnessing live.
